Why I Will Always Love Sundays

Image
I think Sundays get a bad rap.  I've seen posts on social media refer to Sunday as "Monday Eve." That may be the case for some, but for me, it's an opportunity to turn things around.  Kind of like New Year's Day but every week - I can either bury myself in my bed, crawl to the nearest eatery for brunch or reach for those goals I keep setting for myself. Either way, the day will be great. As I get older, my Sundays are not usually spent recovering from a hangover or creating one, unless of course, I had gone out on Friday night. Hey! I'm old. It takes some time to recover! Now, I enjoy getting up early and starting my day. If my Sunday gets away from me without doing something to make the coming work week easier, I might as well just go back to bed.  I make sure to have at least two key tasks completed before the work week starts.  Chores - light clean-up, laundry, sorting out the refrigerator, wash the car, grocery sho...

The Summer of My Fifteenth Year

Image
My neighbor, Maria, shares my love for books. She had mentioned that a good friend of hers had written a story that most would find hard to discuss. I was intrigued, so she let me borrow her copy. The title itself, The Summer of My Fifteenth Year , gives a little clue to what the story is about. I tend to read several books at one time and couldn't seem to find the time to read this one. I almost took it back to Maria and told her that I would get to it some other time but something  always stopped me. Finally, a couple of Sundays ago, I read the entire book in one sitting –– didn't even get up to fix something to eat or stretch my legs. Geri Spencer Hunter is an amazing story teller. One would have to be in order to write about such a sensitive subject matter. After I was finished I cried a little –– which is new for me cause it typically takes a lot for me to get emotional, especially from reading. When I returned Maria's copy to her, I hugged her and tha...

5 Toxic Friends You Need To Distance Yourself From Now!

Image
From the early stages of childhood our driving desire is to be accepted by others. In our teens our popularity is measured by the type of friends we keep. During our early adulthood we hold on to those from school even if they have some faults. Friendship is forever and we will put up with some major shit just to keep our friends. We, as humans, have to be liked. We care what others think of us, even to the point of holding on to individuals as friends much longer than necessary. I have a very small circle of friends in my life. A couple from high school that I consider to be my closest friends. Time cannot effect our love for each other. Then there are some I reconnected with on good ole' Facebook. I have met some great individuals throughout my career and see them as much as life permits. I have been blessed by being introduced to more amazing individuals that I have only known for a few short months but feel like I have known them forever. I cherish these individuals.  ...

Sunday Funday~ The Joys of Living In Midtown

Image
Lately, I have been lagging a bit in the fitness department. I have not completely slacked off since I have been religious about doing yoga every morning. You might be wondering why I am rambling on about exercise with a title like Sunday Funday. Okay, okay I will get to the point. Typically my Sundays are comprised of getting laundry done, errands and being irritated about something. Special Sundays are filled with Brunch.Yummy brunch and bottomless mimosas that will make me useless for the rest of the day. BTW, you cannot swing a dead cat without hitting a place that serves brunch in Midtown. Well I'm on a budget so brunch is out for me this Sunday. I decided to kick up my fitness routine again and went for a walk around McKinley Park. Everyone was out running, walking, pushing a stroller or pulling a doggie. I love McKinley. There are always people out and about and it is nestled in a very charming part of Sacramento. Technically it is considered East Sacramento but whateve...

Why We Keep Getting Feminism Wrong

Image
When I was a young woman, I did not want to be a feminist. All the "feminists" I knew, bashed men. Yelled at them for opening doors or pulling out their chairs. I liked having doors opened for me. I liked my boyfriend walking on the street-side of the sidewalk beside me. And I did not want to share restrooms with guys. Young girls today want to be feminists because that is what Beyonce is. She is "fierce" and the symbol of woman empowerment. Why? She goes out on stage half naked and gives the "look". She embraces her sexuality. She is not the only one in entertainment but I will use her as an example because her name and feminism has been thrown around since the VMAs. Perhaps before, but my Facebook feed is blowing up more now so... whateve. Besides, since when did Bey or Nicki replace Oprah and Barbara Walters as examples of feminism? Then there are women out there stating they don't need Feminism because they are not victims.    ...

Why I Cried When I Heard You Died~ An Open Letter to the Late Robin Williams

Image
Dear Mr. Williams,   I didn't know you. I knew of you through your amazing talent. At a young age, I was enchanted by you and never missed an episode of  Mork  and Mindy. As I grew up, I watched with delight, all of your movies. You made me laugh and you made me cry. Your characters  were inspiring and you brought them to life like no other. Your energy and compassion for others  truly radiated through the big screen and interviews.    If you could come back for even one  day, you would see how many lives you have touched throughout your lifetime. The world became a sadder place yesterday afternoon. We lost yet another ray of sunshine.  It was yesterday that I learned of your battles and heartaches. You see, I don't follow celebrity lifestyles. But if I had followed yours, it would have explained the sorrow  I saw behind those twinkling blue eyes  of yours all these years.   Your death has raised a lot ...

Be Yourself

Image
Perception Is Reality. Let's think about that for a moment. We might think we have control of how people perceive us. We talk a certain way or behave a certain way in order to make sure that other's perception of us is what we desire. Some do this subconsciously while others do this deliberately. What most don't realize is that it doesn't matter what we do or say, ultimately others will come to their own conclusions. If we are fortunate, it works in our favor. If not, well... things can get awkward.  I find as I get older I don't seem to stress much about what others think of me. I think the main reason for this is that I am the same person no matter what social circle I engage in. Of course if I am around older relatives or friends that are more conservative I don't drop "F Bombs" left and right but my core personality is still intact. I try to be respectful of others comfort levels but I can confidently say that if the social circles were...

R is for Respect

Image
R- E -S -P- E- C- T Find out what it means to me. I hate that song. Sorry not a big Aretha fan here. Yet it is the song that comes time mind when people talk about respect. Here is what I'm finding out about what respect really means to people. Everyone wants it but no one wants to give it citing "respect is earned.". Okay well if everyone expects respect, how are they earning it? To an extent respect has to be earned. This does not give free reign on being a jerk face to your boss if he doesn't have your respect. He is still your boss. The one that gets paid to make sure you do your job right. He may be the biggest creep in the world. Still your boss. I'm not saying to tolerate hostile working conditions or harassment, just pick your battles. Here is the respect I love people throwing around. I knew this woman, oh my god this woman was easier to make than toast! Anyway, she loves to get on chat/dating sites to "meet and mingle". She will post...

Capricorn

Image
Capricorn ~ The Goat December 22 - January 20 This zodiac sign is a sign of stability, calmness, and maturity. Individuals born under this sign are typically not risk takers. They are kind and considerate but will flip out on you in a flash. The tarot for Capricorn is The Devil. Symbol of control and addiction. Okay.... Capricorn Women are traditional in most aspects of their life. Stubborn and rarely can be lead in a different direction. Sexually they are, well lets just say after she sheds that business suit and sensible undies... watch out! It's on like Donkey Kong! Capricorn Men are typically conservative and follow the rules. They tend to be "loners" or have few in their circles. Some have the appearance of being cold and emotionally aloof, but it is more of a defense tactic. They take love seriously and are not usually players or cheaters. In the bedroom they are surprisingly "effective". They "bring it" so to speak. Go Capricorns...

Aries

Image
Aries March 21- April 20 Depicted by the ram, a symbol of male fertility, aggression, and courage. Aries is the first zodiac sign and quite a handful. The tarot that represents Aries is The Emperor. Aries is a fire sign. Everything about this sign denotes strength and a lot of stubbornness.  Sexually the Aries woman is adventurous and usually takes the reigns. Let her. Sexually the Aries man is needs it all the time. Seriously. So if you have a "headache" better make it believable or his ego will be shattered. Basically if you are an Aries you are strong willed, a born leader, and take no crap from anyone. The best friend a person can have or the worst enemy. Also you need lots and lots of sex.  You know what I picture? A woman that is bat $h!t crazy and an oversexed frat boy ramming each other.   ha ha ha, see what I did there?

St. Valentine's Day Massacre~ No Flowers or Chocolates Required

Image
Here we go again... Valentine's Day is near.  A day for lovers!  Belch. If you are single and not happy about being single, this day is worse than not having anyone to kiss on New Year's Eve.  Why does it have to be so dreadful? The ones that have a really difficult time on Valentine's Day are in a relationship and don't get anything. No flowers, chocolates, fancy dinner, or even a freaking card. Yes, there are plenty of individuals that do not get something from their lovey.  T he best? Is when you are single and that "secret admirer" sends a beautiful rose. Not really... it's creepy. Secret admirers are stalkers.  Back in the day, this holiday was more like a lottery for lovers . Y oung girls would write down their names on slips of papers and put them in a bucket or urn. Urn sounds cooler... so urn it is.  Anyway, these names would be drawn by the young men. The drawer and drawee would then be coupled for the re...
