Dear Fat People - Get Over It

Image
Fat shaming... What is this all about anyway? I will tell you. Ever since "What is Your Excuse" mom came on the scene a couple of years ago, fat people everywhere have lost their minds.  Who monopolized on this "outrage"? Social Media. Yes, imagine that... Social Media blowing things out of proportion - this time, manipulating our view of health. With that came the "body positive" articles flooding everyone's news feed. Plus-sized models are baring it all in hopes of "awareness" and promoting sensitivity regarding the obese. But what they are really doing is a little irresponsible.  You can love yourself no matter how you look. You can ignore what others say. Speak up when people are truly being treated badly. All of this is positive. I fully agree. What isn't positive? Ignoring the health issues that come with obesity. Some say, "Well it isn't promoting obesity because now one looks at these models and says that they a...

Has The Napa Valley Wine Train Been "De-Railed"?

Image
Photo Source: winetrain.com As racial tension continues to escalate in our fine country, everything is now being scrutinized as racist. The newest target for racial discrimination allegations is The Napa Valley Wine Train.  Over the weekend, a book club made up of mostly black women, were escorted off The Napa Valley Wine Train. Staff claimed the group refused to comply with several requests that their group quiet down. These women are now claiming the actions of the staff were racially charged. These women even went as far as Tweeting the incident with the hashtag #laughingwhileblack to imply if they had been a group of white people, the staff would not have ejected them from the train. Now some Latinos are claiming similar treatment.  I read comments on post threads stating that wine tasting is a white person's hobby and that people of color can afford it and should be able to enjoy it  their  way. Really? What happened to comm...

The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions

Image
Unless you have been living in a cave for the past year, I'm sure you are aware of the indictment cases in NYC and Ferguson. People are outraged and are looking for ways to be "heard". I get that. It makes perfect sense to want to speak up for injustice and fight for change. So why are we protesting these rulings by blocking traffic on a freeway? At night? This is a problem, not a solution. I woke up this morning and found a post from a local new station that our local freeway was blocked due to protesters. The comment thread was not civil and, as always, disheartening. Those opposed posted comments like "run them over" or "get a job". While I do not agree with people putting their lives and the lives of others in jeopardy, suggesting they be ran over is counterproductive and kind of scary. Also, this activity was done after normal business hours so who is to say they do not work? Then there were the supporters (few) but they made their support k...

Q is for Quizzes

Image
The not so newest craze is taking that quiz and posting your results on Facebook, Twitter, and maybe still Myspace? Is that still around? According to the many quizzes I have taken in desperation of finding out my true identity, I have uncovered some exciting things I never knew about myself. I'm ~ Fleetwood Mac A Rose Wine Chelsea Handler or Tina Fey (I forget exactly which one) A Dragon Dating a burn out from a John Hughes Movie Red Living in the wrong town Not as much of an asshole as I thought. Kind of a music snob Whoa! How did I ever get through life up to this point not knowing all this valuable information? Thank the gods for Buzzfeed ! All sarcasm aside, I like many others, enjoy taking these quizzes and at times get irritated with the results because it isn't a true reflection of myself. Seriously, a burn out for a boyfriend? Pahleeze I do have friends that get "cool" results and post them in efforts to reinforce their coolness from hi...

F is for Friendship

Image
When a real-life friend deletes you as a contact on a social media site. Have you ever had this done to you? Was it after a fight on the phone or in person? Better yet, over a post? Did they delete you without notice? Have you deleted someone just to have them request your online friendship again?  Believe it or not this happens all the time. Today people don't just stop talking to each other after a falling out, they delete them. Sometimes the act of the delete causes the falling out. Have we distanced ourselves so much from each other that the way to break up a friendship or even a relationship is through a social media site?  I had someone that I considered a good friend stop interacting with me on Facebook. I didn't take it serious or personal because nothing strange happened between us. I am very busy and so are they. The next thing I knew, they delete me as a friend. Out of the blue. I called,  texted, and even emailed trying to get an answer. This was no...

D is for Deception

Image
Today is National Tell A Lie Day or as my ex-boyfriend would say, "Saturday". Get it? Cause it's really Friday but  he is a liar? Ha ha ha ha Yes, I do explain my jokes and laugh at them.  Although there are many forms of deception, we will focus on lying. Why do people lie? Some say they only lie to spare a person's feelings. Others really don't give a reason and go as far as saying they don't lie at all. Everyone lies at some point in their life. If someone says they never lie, they just lied to themselves.  There are little "white" lies. "does this dress make me look fat?" "no dear, it looks fine." Unless you are Al Bundy and point out that it isn't the dress that makes you look fat, it's the fat that makes you look fat. This isn't any "honesty" blog post so we will move along. "There are some good people. But a good chunk of them will lie for no reason at all - it'll be ten o'c...

Arguing In the Street

Image
When I first moved to Midtown I had a great flat practically right in the center of all the action. I could walk across the street and enjoy the best Mexican restaurant in the city or take in a dinner and a show a block away. Bars everywhere! On hot nights, since my apartment didn't have the best air conditioning, I would sleep in the living room with the front door ajar (security screen locked) and the windows open to bring in a nice cross breeze.  Unfortunately, having the door and windows opened not only brought in the breeze but the noise from the local night life - people laughing and having a great time. On one particular night or should I say, early morning, I was rudely awakened by a couple arguing in the middle of the street. It sounded like they were right in my living room.  "You were looking at her!", the girl was yelling. "No babe... it wasn't like that." replied the exasperated boyfriend. It seemed like they had been at it fore...

Fit or Fat at 45: Week One of Twenty-One

Image
Even with all the inspiration that is being sent my way I have to say that week one of my Fit or Fat journey was not that great. I have managed to let some life stresses get the better of me. I didn't gain anymore but I didn't lose either.  So for this week I am going to be more structured. No more self pity. There are things in life that one cannot control. I can however control my mood.  No. I'm not moving boulders. I just like the picture! I mean, just look at it... damn.  I was pleased to find out today that three of the fitness apps I seldom use (haha, ya...), sync! So in order to keep my motivation going I will be posting my progress reports from my Fit Bit Tracker. Since I made this commitment publicly, I kinda have to do it now. I have had this device since October of last year. I like it but need to make it work harder for me. Keep me in line with my fitness goals. But like all other apps, it is only as good as ...

Social Media: Unprofessional Habits on a Professional Network

I am on LinkedIn. I happen to think a professional networking site is a great idea. No drama about who did who's boyfriend or "like this photo or ignore and your grandma dies" kinda crap. Okay maybe the who did who's boyfriend was a little overkill.  Anyway, in the past year I have been more and more involved with networking on LinkedIn . I am not too thrilled with the fact that you HAVE to know your contacts. It is against the rules of the networking site to request a connection with someone you do not know. I get it, reduces spam and the drama you left on Facebook but still... the goal is to NETWORK. Most don't pay attention to this rule (myself included) and connect with as many people we can until LinkedIn restricts us. At that point you have to know the other person's email address before you can send a request. Cool. Now we just comment in public with our email addresses and people can request connections, bypassing the "rule". I'm fine...

Fit Or Fat At Forty-Five? Part 1 in a Series

Image
Exactly 6 months from today I will be 45 years old. Like the majority of Americans I am not in shape and need to lose a good amount of weight.  Like everyone else that is overweight I have tried many different ways of getting fit and losing the extra pounds. Fad diets, supplements, personal trainers (2 days, not 2 days a week just 2 days...), and whatever else that seems to be "effective" that's on the market.  I have however gradually changed my diet and activity levels. As of today I don't eat fast food or drink sodas. I am not one that craves sweets so I don't have to worry about a donut temptation. I have started using coconut milk and love it. Kale salads are amazing. I'm finding wonderful healthy foods. I have even reduced my alcohol consumption. Once a week Happy Hour with friends and none at home.  I also do not eat after 8pm and make sure that I am drinking plenty of water.  Coffee has been replaced with green tea. Well, I cheat on the coff...

Fork In the Road

Image
Which way do you go? Do you go down the left or the right?  If you take the wrong path can others judge you? Whose to say you are headed in the wrong direction in the first place? Is it really so important that everyone believe the same?  Because I don't go to church or worship your god I'm going to burn in hell fire? I haven't killed anyone. I don't cheat or steal. I love my mom and dad. Besides, isn't that up to the big guy to decide anyway?  I took the wrong path once. I doubled back and went the way I was supposed to. Not because someone told me but because the direction I was headed didn't feel right for me. It wasn't where I was meant to be.  I had someone tell me today to repent for "he is coming and I will surely pay for my ways." What a great approach! Unfortunately for that person, I happen to know my way around the Good Book. What about those that don't? Those who are verbally beat up in the name of being sav...

9 Lives

Image
Everyone is born with a number. Mine happens to be 9 but that is an other story for a different day. Today is all about the feline. Whether you are a cat  person or a dog person, maybe a little bit of both, you can agree that there are challenges in owning and LOVING a pet. My friend sent me this link yesterday. Geez, I thought my lil demon kitties were bad. Well, they kinda are but I did rescue them from the wild. ;) http://www.sunnyskyz.com/blog/79/The-27-Naughtiest-Cats-In-The-World-And-I-Can-t-Stop-Laughing

You Have the Right to Remain Silent...

Image
...any article or post you comment on can and will be seen by everyone.  Ah the Internet. Full of articles, posts, social profiles... you name it. A person can comment on just about anything these days.  Here is what I don't get. So, let's say you have this article on...quilting. Some chick found a new way to quilt and the local newspaper posts the story on their website. Human interest story. You read the article. Then browse down at the comments. The first couple are nice comments asking "what stitch is used?" or "where did they get that fabulous fabric?" It doesn't take long before there is a comment commenting on another commenter's comment. You still with me? Yeah commenter's is not a word. So comment below about it. Anyway, these comments are usually not very nice. What starts out to be "nice pattern", five comments down the feed turn into "I hope your family dies!".  These are even people who don't p...
