A Wicked Life

I had a discussion with my brother-in-law the other day. It was a mutual observation that individuals in this day and age are so easily offended. We are a society of thin skinned babies. What exactly happened to our ability to let shit roll off our backs? Laugh at ourselves for our differences? Be secure in our own skin? People are even offended of things that don't even apply to them in an effort to be socially considerate. Groups are created with the social conscience of calling out "insensitive" words or behaviors. Blogs are saturated with "What Skinny/Short/Heavy/ People Are Tired of Being Asked", posts. I recently read an article on LinkedIn about how a social media consultant felt when she was told "I don't do social media." She then began to give her observation on what kind of person is not into social media and that saying those words, shows they don't have any respect for her profession. R- E -S -P- E- C- T Find out what it means to me. I hate that song. Sorry not a big Aretha fan here. Yet it is the song that comes time mind when people talk about respect. Here is what I'm finding out about what respect really means to people. Everyone wants it but no one wants to give it citing "respect is earned.". Okay well if everyone expects respect, how are they earning it? To an extent respect has to be earned. This does not give free reign on being a jerk face to your boss if he doesn't have your respect. He is still your boss. The one that gets paid to make sure you do your job right. He may be the biggest creep in the world. Still your boss. I'm not saying to tolerate hostile working conditions or harassment, just pick your battles. Here is the respect I love people throwing around.
