The Fine Line Between Freedom of Religion and Discrimination

Image
Every morning I go to the same donut shop. Well it is more of a bakery but I go there just for the donuts. The owner is very nice. A little timid the first time she waited on me but it may have been the amulet I wore and still wear around my neck. She is a Christian lady. I can tell because of the dainty little gold cross she wears around her neck. I've come to expect some push back in this small community. Although I have experienced my share of discrimination for one thing or another, I keep on keeping on. Not everyone is going to disappoint me. Right?   It's now been a little over a year since I started going to this bakery. The owner has warmed up to me and calls me by my first name when I walk through her door. It's nice and the boundaries don't seem to exist any longer. I couldn't wait to see her this morning. I have exciting news! I'm going to get married!!! I can't think of any one else to bake the cake for my special day but Lisa.  I walked in w

Dirty Vegas~ How Clean Is Your Hotel Room?

Image
Well I haven't posted in awhile due to a crazy schedule and February just seems to be flying by...  I thought I would share my latest experience in travel. First of all I know there are a lot of hotel nightmare stories out there and studies done about how often bedspreads are washed and so forth. For that very reason I tend to be a little manic when traveling. Not too bad, I don't have an ultra violet light but after my last trip to Vegas, I am seriously considering getting one.   I have to share these pictures with you. They are gross but it needs to happen.  The wash cloth is on the handle of this sink because when I got up in the morning to get ready, I noticed some very dry toothpaste just kicking it in the most unusual spot of the faucet handle.... nice.  After lining the counter top with a huge bath towel (had to put my toiletries somewhere "clean") I went to use the hair dryer. Until now I have NEVER seen such a filthy hair dryer. I

Who, Where, and Why~ Happy Hour On The Grid

Image
Everyone loves Happy Hour! Drink specials, great snacks, and time to decompress with friends. Whether you are a frequent partaker of Happy Hour or just once in awhile, here are a few places that are a must in Midtown Sacramento. Note:  This post isn't a plug and I'm not getting any compensation for the reviews. In fact, they are not even aware I'm writing this! Tee Hee The Red Rabbit Kitchen and Bar   It's a cozy lil place with big foods and drinks. The bartenders are artists. And I mean ARTISTS! I'm not a fan of whiskey but this place has made me a believer. Rich, the bartender, puts together amazingly unique concoctions with basil, balsamic, raspberry puree and bourbon.... lordy! Lost my train of thought for a minute. It isn't just about the drinks, it's everything. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with a little speak easy feel... Great for dinner with that special someone or a quick bite and fabulous drink with a friend after work, hence

St. Valentine's Day Massacre~ No Flowers or Chocolates Required

Image
Here we go again... Valentine's Day is near.  A day for lovers!  Belch. If you are single and not happy about being single, this day is worse than not having anyone to kiss on New Year's Eve.  Why does it have to be so dreadful? The ones that have a really difficult time on Valentine's Day are in a relationship and don't get anything. No flowers, chocolates, fancy dinner, or even a freaking card. Yes, there are plenty of individuals that do not get something from their lovey.  T he best? Is when you are single and that "secret admirer" sends a beautiful rose. Not really... it's creepy. Secret admirers are stalkers.  Back in the day, this holiday was more like a lottery for lovers . Y oung girls would write down their names on slips of papers and put them in a bucket or urn. Urn sounds cooler... so urn it is.  Anyway, these names would be drawn by the young men. The drawer and drawee would then be coupled for the remainder o

Crepe Expectations- Why Crepeville Is My Rainy Day Destination

Image
Midtown Sacramento has a wide range of places to eat. Hole in the walls, fine dining, and. burger joints.  Pictured here is Crepeville . For years  I would pass by this eatery thinking to myself, "who the hell eats crepes on a regular basis?".  Since I started working downtown I have been more adventurous in trying new places. I like to try new foods but usually end up in a rut very quickly. Especially if I like something. Never considered crepes. I'm a living contradiction. One day, after a co-worker suggested it, I decided to check out Crepeville and see what all the hype was about.  Holy crap! The menu alone is amazing. Anything you can think of to put into a crepe is there. Well just about everything. Not only do they have crepes but also sandwiches, salads, pastas, and burgers... mmmm Did I mention cucumber water?  Since I was a bit overwhelmed I opted for a burger (of course). GREAT burger. Side salad (usually comes with potatoes but I'm not ready f

Out of the (Broom) Closet ~ Does Stevie Nicks Have It Right?

Image
Bewitched aired in 1964  Of course by the time I was old enough to watch it the show was in syndication. I love that show!  Sam's sister Serena, mother Endora, and who can forget her father Maurice?  Uncle Arthur was my favorite!    Charmed aired in 1998   Don't care. Didn't watch it and never will. Since then there have been several movies about witches. Witches of Eastwick (one of my all time favorites), Practical Magic, The Craft...too many to list. The fascination with witches and witchcraft is centuries old. It has seen some dark times. Salem Witch Hunts for example. Innocents burned at the stake for being witches. Heretics if you will. Today, well today the television is filled with shows about modern day witches.  Witches of East End -Lifetime's answer to what happened to the girls from Charmed. Have I seen it? No. Will I? No. Then there is..... American Horror Story's Coven. The 'White Witch' herself, Stevie Nick

Fit or Fat at 45: Week One of Twenty-One

Image
Even with all the inspiration that is being sent my way I have to say that week one of my Fit or Fat journey was not that great. I have managed to let some life stresses get the better of me. I didn't gain anymore but I didn't lose either.  So for this week I am going to be more structured. No more self pity. There are things in life that one cannot control. I can however control my mood.  No. I'm not moving boulders. I just like the picture! I mean, just look at it... damn.  I was pleased to find out today that three of the fitness apps I seldom use (haha, ya...), sync! So in order to keep my motivation going I will be posting my progress reports from my Fit Bit Tracker. Since I made this commitment publicly, I kinda have to do it now. I have had this device since October of last year. I like it but need to make it work harder for me. Keep me in line with my fitness goals. But like all other apps, it is only as good as the date being input.
